It exists because "just bring something funny" is how a party ends up with fifteen novelty items nobody wants to carry home, and because the rules of the game are argued about every year by people who have never seen them written down.

Every guide here is a buying guide. We explain the game, the price caps, and how to judge whether a gift will read across a crowded room and still get used in February.
